The topic of metabolism tends to focus on only one small piece of a very broad system, your weight or how metabolism can change your structure. And while metabolism can influence how you look—positively or negatively—it’s much more than that. A true understanding of metabolism starts by looking at the bigger picture.
Metabolism is the sum of all life-sustaining biochemical processes in your body. It governs how you create and conserve energy, which directly affects how you heal, rejuvenate, remove waste, build, and preserve. It’s not energy itself but determines how your body generates and utilizes it.
Think of metabolism as a thermostat, constantly working to maintain balance. It’s influenced by external factors and, in turn, influences internal systems, making it one of the most critical aspects of your health.
And here’s the kicker: metabolism isn’t static. It’s not something you inherit and can’t change. Instead, it’s dynamic, always adapting to your actions and environment.
Debunking Metabolism Myths
There’s no shortage of stories and misconceptions about metabolism, leading to health practices aimed at “hacking” it. But metabolism isn’t something to fix; it’s something to influence.
Your metabolism responds to a wide range of factors, including:
- What you eat and how you move
- Your thoughts and mindset
- Hormones, vitamins, and minerals
- Oxygen and macronutrient availability
- The balance between burdens and resources

When the burdens—like bacteria, toxins, calorie restriction, or trauma—outweigh the resources your body has, your metabolism suffers. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. The good news is that you can always alter your metabolism by learning how to influence it.
Inside this podcast, I share the knowledge you need to understand metabolism and how to influence it to generate energy and create health. It starts by understanding the one thing that will change your metabolism.
One thing that will change your metabolism.
One thing that will change your metabolism is learning how to positively influence it. Of course, food is one of the major players in your metabolism, but it isn’t the only one. Your metabolic health isn’t about following a one-size-fits-all plan. It’s about tuning into your body and its biofeedback markers, such as energy levels, digestion, and mood, to understand what works for you.
But you have to pay attention to know what is positively influencing your body (as understood based on these biofeedback markers).
Health never has and never will be about the perfect eating plan because health requires you to understand what your body needs and provide for it, regardless of what your eating plan says.
Your needs will always change, which is why you have to be open to understanding them on a daily basis.
Foundational steps to improve your metabolic health
Here are ten foundational steps to start improving your metabolic health:
- Get Morning Sunlight
Spend 10 minutes in natural sunlight shortly after waking up. Skip the sunglasses or windows—direct exposure matters. - Move Your Body Regularly
Physical activity, no matter how small, makes a difference. Break up sedentary time with movement throughout the day. - Eat Breakfast Early
Have a nutrient-rich breakfast within 60 minutes of waking up to kickstart your metabolism for the day. - Prioritize Protein at Every Meal
Protein requires more energy to digest, helping boost your metabolic rate while keeping you full and supporting muscle repair. But you have to have carbohydrates to use protein effectively. - Stay Hydrated
Dehydration slows down your metabolism. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and consider adding a pinch of sea salt for electrolytes. - Get Quality Sleep
Poor sleep disrupts hormones that regulate appetite and energy balance. Aim for 7–9 hours of quality rest each night. - Incorporate Strength Training
Building muscle mass increases your resting metabolic rate, meaning you generate (and burn more energy) even when at rest. - Reduce Stress
Chronic stress increases cortisol, which can negatively impact metabolism. Practice stress management techniques. That doesn’t mean eliminate stress but learn to do something positive with it. - Minimize Processed Foods
Whole, nutrient-dense foods support metabolic health better than ultra-processed, high-sugar options because nutrients in whole foods are required to build and use energy. - Enjoy Life
Even the Bible refers to joy as our strength, “Let the joy of the Lord be your strength.” Don’t overestimate how a perspective of joy can influence every single one of your trillion cells to respond in a healthier way.
