Body Weight Matters (Don’t take it personally)
Five years ago, I would have despised this conversation. Not because I ever believed body weight didn’t matter, but because I didn’t want it to matter the way we were depicting it. Really, what I wanted was to alleviate the intense emotional baggage (what some would call trauma) that came with the topic of body weight.
I wanted to free people from the strong grip that body weight held on us. Including the way it quietly dictated our moods, confidence, and even the direction of our lives.
While I don’t agree with the entire body love movement, I do understand why it rose so quickly. The world was tired of the shame we attached to a number glaring back at us from the scale.
At the same time, most people care about their weight. Not always out of vanity, but because it’s a biological human desire. The truth is, there is an inherent drive inside all of us to be well. And whether you like it or not, part of that conversation is achieving a healthy body weight.
This conversation can bring you the freedom you’ve sought in a diet.
Now, before you get lost in the emotional spiral that such a conversation can bring, I encourage you to come with an open mind. If you allow it, understanding body weight in a new light can help bring the freedom you hoped to find in the body love movement.
It also helps align you with what can help change your weight. A process that is the opposite of restriction, deprivation, or the most common dieting practices we’ve fallen for.
The real message about body weight is a conversation about structure and learning how to work with your body, supplying what it needs to build a resilient, strong foundation that can help you move through life with more ease.
In this episode, I break down the illusion of the scale, including what we’ve missed in the modern conversation about body weight, and how to begin shifting the structure of your body instead of obsessing over a number.
Your body does nothing without purpose. Even body fat serves a role. You have to respect before you can change it.
