I clearly remember standing in my middle school bathroom, wiping Dove Antiperspirant off my black shirt. The white streak was so familiar and never failed to appear. Probably because I had to reapply deodorant nearly every time I used the bathroom.
Taking Dove everywhere with me.
I used to think my smell was just genetics. Believing there was nothing I could do but slather on some more antiperspirant, knowing that I would soon lose another shirt to underarm stains and another day would go on.
But with age came wisdom and the belief that just because I have body odor doesn’t mean I always will. There has to be a way to help underarm odor, and I was determined to try anything I could to eliminate it.
Why do you struggle with body odor?
Most of the smells we generate come from four places;
- Breath
- Pubic area
- Feet
- Armpits
Like any smell in the body, odor has to do with a bacterial and hormonal imbalance. The bacteria produce the smell, and the hormonal imbalance leads to excessive sweating and the nature of what sweat is released.
Yes, we have different types of sweat like stress sweat, exercise sweat, night sweats, sauna sweat, etc.
Each different type of sweat releases different compounds, and the compounds interact with the bacteria to create an odor, some much worse than others.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are a lot of remedies for body odor, including an armpit detox.
Try an armpit detox.
Your underarms are one of the many dumping sites of your lymphatic system. Meaning it’s an excretion point via sweat to get rid of excess toxins and congestion in the body. Showcasing why you want to avoid anything that clogs these pores, like antiperspirant.
That’s why you should give your pits a break and eliminate the antiperspirant opting for a plain deodorant. Even with deodorant use, you can create a dependency on it because the deodorant is causing more particles for the body to detox.
It’s that vicious cycle, but there are a few ways around it.
Quick tips to detox your armpits.
- Eliminate the antiperspirants and opt for a deodorant.
- Cut back on how many times you apply deodorant, aiming to remove the nighttime application, creating space and air for your pits to breathe.
- If you shave your armpits, try to do it at night rather than in the morning. The shaving process opens up pours and sometimes microscopic cuts that can increase the smelly bacteria. Allow your pits space to air-dry after shaving.
- Opt for a more natural deodorant.
- Keep your underarms clean, dry and try adding an armpit detox mask to your weekly routine.
Let’s talk DIY Armpit Detox Mask
Think face mask, but slathered on your armpit instead.
I know it sounds out there, and it definitely registers at ‘crunchy’ granola level, but I’m serious. Cleaning out those pits and the pores in your underarms can be extremely beneficial.
You can buy an all-natural mask most likely designed for your face like this one or make you’re own. Here’s a simple recipe to try out.
diy detox mask
- 1 teaspoon bentonite clay
- 1/2 teaspoon Takesumi powder {more powerful than activated charcoal but could use charcoal as well}
- 1 teaspoon organic apple cider vinegar
- 3 drops tea tree oil
- In a small glass bowl, combine the clay, Takesumi, apple cider vinegar, and oil.
- Stir to combine. If the mixture is too dry, add a few drops of water until you reach the desired consistency.
- Apply mask to clean armpit, spreading in an even layer.
- Leave the mask on for 10 minutes and rinse off with warm water and a washcloth.
- Wait to put deodorant for as long as possible.
another armpit detox option
The second way I detox my armpits is more of a daily thing. I douse a cotton ball in organic apple cider vinegar and rub it around in each armpit.
It sounds terrible and certainly doesn’t smell the greatest for the first few minutes. But the smell quickly wears off and helps balance the bacteria preventing body odor from appearing throughout the day.
One cotton ball, some Apple Cider Vinegar, and a small daily practice can make a big change. Honestly, I have days now where I don’t even have to wear deodorant.
Trust me when I say this seemed like an impossible feat.

I am intrigued by the armpit detox:) And with SO many uses for apple cider vinegar, this is not one I would have ever imagined. Going to try this! I’ve already adopted the shaving thing at night months ago and I never put deodorant on at night anyways to allow them to breathe. I do what feels right to my body more as I get older and it seems to pay off.
Way to listen to your body! That is such a great gift! And let me know how you like the apple cider vinegar!
This is such a cool thing, DIY mask for your arm pits – my husband will say “I knew you’re crazy but not that much” (I am joking) :))) I don’t have betonite clay, what can I use instead? It sounds super super interesting.
No antiperspirant for the last 6-7 years, no deodorant at night but I barely sweat anyway :))))
