Body Weight Matters (Don’t take it personally)
I’ve spent most of my life giving the scale too much power. I had given it the power to change my mood, alter how I show up for myself, and even change my identity. It sounds extreme when I type it out. But can we be honest for a moment?
Have you, too, allowed the number glaring back at you from the scale to change your identity?
Maybe you, too, took on the identity of being overweight. Or you have a failure identity, believing nothing you do ever works. It could be a victim identity or the invisible identity that leads you to believe that you’ll never be seen, known, or loved. All because of the number on the scale.
It’s not that you choose this. Most people don’t step on the scale, surrender their worth to it, and give it the power to change their reality. We do it because that’s what we’ve learned to do, not knowing it doesn’t have to be that way.
The scale doesn’t define your worth. You do!
That definition is based on what you’ve believed about that number and about yourself. Which means, it’s a you thing. And if it’s your thing, you have every ability to change.
How I’ve come to appreciate the scale.
In the last few years, I had a long-awaited reckoning with the scale. And that changed my relationship with my body. In this podcast, I share my story, what I’ve learned, and how I use and don’t use the scale.
I also share how I appreciate the scale based on the data it offers and how I use it to generate power in my life. The truth is your body weight matters, but it’s not just the number, but what that number is made up of. What constitutes the weight of your body mass?
Most scales can’t provide the information you really need. Which is why I recommend buying one that does, showcasing the metrics that matter most. However, if you can’t or don’t have one to purchase, you can still take action.
That starts by disconnecting your worth from your weight. They are not the same. Instead of focusing on your weight, spend time identifying where your worth lies. Go back and work on your true identity.
Then, understand the number based on the information it provides, knowing you are not stuck with that number. But you have full autonomy to change it. Ask, what information is your body weight providing, and from that, what action can you take to support it?
No one can do this work but you. It won’t be perfect. It will take time to rebuild a relationship with the scale, but it’s worth it.
Whether you step on the scale or not, most likely, if you’re in an unhealthy relationship with your body weight, the scale is haunting you. That means you’re giving it more power, energy, and focus than it needs. I encourage you to create your own reckoning with the scale. Stop letting it define your worth, steal your joy, and your life.
