Want to be healthy as an enneagram four? Inside I teach you how to use your type for health, along with practical steps to make it happen.

How To Use The Enneagram To Get Healthy

It’s no surprise that everyone ticks a little differently, making health more than just a one-size-fits-all approach. What motivates, scares, and pushes you is very different yet critical in understanding what it will take to help you change. You can not expect what works for someone else will work the same for you because you’re not the same.

As a four, you feel in the way most people never will, shifting how you view and interact with life. You may question if your feelings are ‘normal,’ but I hope you’ll learn this is not what makes you different but unique.

That’s what I love about the Enneagram. It adds more personality to what you do and why you do it. Plus, it’s invaluable in understanding specific action steps you should begin and those to stop doing, creating a more realistic plan suitable for you.

Today, we’re talking all about Enneagram type four. As a four, you function very differently than a five or a six, yet you do it in your own creative and beautiful way. If you’re an enneagram four or know one, this could be powerful information in helping you achieve health and live a more fulfilling life.

If you don’t know your enneagram type, take this quiz to find out.

Enneagram Type Four

Fours, you feel in a way that most people never will. While this makes you question your differences, even wondering what is missing from your life, what would change if you started to view yourself as who you wanted to become?

To end the search for who you think you need to be and start living true to who you are – confident and sure.

In health, as a four, you can become one of the most confident and sure humans on this planet. You have to choose to live it instead of living in worry and envy that you haven’t arrived. Shift the view from what you lack to the unique and beautiful creation you are.

As a four, you are the meaning makers, bringing purpose, logic, and creativity to the world and doing it with grace. Your gifts, talents, and art can pull people up, transforming them into better, happier people with each encounter you grace them.

To get healthy, you must recognize that while you can feel everything, you do not need to become what you feel. Your feelings don’t own you or rule your life. You get to choose how you act, changing the way you feel.

Enneagram Four Health Tips

Want to be healthy as an enneagram four? Inside I teach you how to use your type for health, along with practical steps to make it happen.

Fours, you reside in the heart triad. You live and form your identity based on how you feel – looking to others and your image to drive your change.

You are attuned to and sensitive to your own emotions, a powerful asset you can use to help you live a healthy lifestyle. But often, your emotions overwhelm you, and you feel the need to comfort yourself to get through your emotional season. You use food, distraction, and withdrawal to fill the void that seems to be missing in your life.

You eat, exercise, and live based on how you feel rather than living life to feel good.

I wonder what would happen if you stopped doing things based on how you felt and instead started living to feel good? Don’t suffer through the quick fix.

When it comes to nurturing your body, let yourself process the emotional well-being in your mind, body, and soul and move out of these emotions and back into you. Remember, your emotions do not define you. They do not make your identity. You can feel them, but you do not need to become them.

Things change when you learn how to acknowledge your feelings without accepting them as true. To understand that while you feel it, you do not need to act on it. Instead of telling yourself you are fat. Try acknowledging that you have extra fat you’d like to lose without accepting the belief making it part of your identity. Try, I have extra body fat I’d like to lose, and I know I can because I am strong and capable.

Choose instead to nourish your emotions by doing more of what makes you feel good.

Enneagram Four Health Strengths

Four’s, you are the deep feelers living with a natural desire to make the world a better place with the art you create. If you combine the ability to be inventive with your deep self-awareness, you will find  – the strengths you possess, when used healthily, can help you live in health for life.

Use these strengths to your advantage:

  • Original and inventive
  • Introspective
  • Creative
  • Ability to hold space
  • Unafraid to go to the deep areas
  • Highly self-aware
  • Emotionally honest
  • Vulnerable
  • Desire for growth
  • Quiet strength and bravery
  • Ability to make the world a better place

Enneagram Four Health Struggles

Considering you feel everything and base your identity on your feelings – it’s vital as a four to learn how to feel but not become your feelings. This will create more balance by shifting away from the emotional extremes you struggle through.

It’s not to say that you shouldn’t feel. Feelings are part of you and something you should never suppress or escape. But learning how to channel the emotions you are experiencing and shifting how you respond can change your entire life. Remember, just because you feel it doesn’t mean you have to believe it.

Understanding your feelings without accepting them allows you to change your perception of them, changing the course of your entire life. It’s the foundation of emotional IQ. Emotional IQ for a four can be off the charts, genius status, if you learn how to manage them.

Create new rhythms based on how you feel. Allow yourself to experience them, feel them, but then let them go. This prevents those feelings from running your life and opens up space to be true to who you are outside of what you’re feeling – consistent, even, healthy, and filled.

Try switching your mindset from living based on how you feel to focusing on how you could live to feel good. If you miss the ‘good’ part, you’ll most likely get stuck in a prolonged state of melancholy. Which can be helpful for a short ride but not the prolonged one you call life. Joy, happiness, health, those are your choice – choose them.

Remember, you are not loved for what you’ve accomplished but because of who you are.

5 Practical Health Tips for Enneagram Four

Feel it, but then choose to let it go. You can choose how you feel instead of letting your emotions drive your life. When you trust you are not your feelings, you open up space to do more of what makes you feel good.

The way you feel deeply is one of my favorite things about fours. You never shy away from deep and hard places. You are a group of people who can see the world through a new lens. But in this, you must not just fixate on the bad but on what makes you feel good. Here are some practical steps to create nourishing life rhythms.

1. Create A Meal Plan

Four’s in health, you mimic a healthy one. A healthy one loves all the lists and methods. Planning and writing out what you will eat, even just for dinner, opens up space for you to feel without needing to suppress your feelings through food. Help organize those feelings with a simple meal plan. Use cooking as a way to be creative and relational.

2. Start Your Day With Positive Affirmations

The world is not always a happy and inviting place, and you know that all too well. Instead of waking up to feeling bad – wake up and commit to starting your day with positivity.

Create a morning routine of positive affirmations. Reciting the strengths of who you are, what you bring to the table, and reminding yourself why you were created. A morning mantra of sorts. Then repeat it daily.

3. Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is one of the healthiest things we know to do {and it’s well-researched}, yet it’s one of the hardest things to stick with. Partially because you’ve believed it must hurt a little if it works. If there is no pain, is there anything to gain?

But that’s precisely the opposite of lasting health. Of course, health, even living happily, takes a level of discipline. Gratitude helps shift the perspective of what you classify as pain, seeing the world in a new light. Writing out three things you’re grateful for every day can help rewire your brain to make you feel good. You might not feel it right away, but long term, there are lasting benefits, especially as a four.

4. Create A Routine

As a four, it’s easy to get lost in your feelings. To let them overwhelm you, causing you to lean into distraction or withdraw yourself from life to deal with these emotions. While I’m not asking you to stop feeling, creating a daily routine or healthy rhythms will help you live healthily on good and bad days.

Routines naturally put an end to living out of your feelings and instead live based on how you want to feel. Try creating a morning or evening routine and see how this changes how you do things.

5. Stop Comparing Yourself

As a four, confidence is one of your most powerful traits experienced in health. It’s because of your deep awareness of how you feel that allows you to step out with the most confidence. But that only happens when you stop comparing yourself to someone else.

As a four, you tend to look at life through the lens of what you lack—comparing your insides to someone’s polaroid-perfect exterior. A comparison that isn’t honest or even fair. It’s time to stop fixating on others more than you living true to who you are. Ironically, the less you compare to others, the less you fixate on yourself, and the more you can help others through your gifts and talents. To think less about yourself, you have to think more of who you are.

Bonus Tip: Do More Planning

You go where you are needed, sometimes leaving you scattered and chaotic. Beat these feelings and ensure your making the most of your hustle by creating a plan. A plan that helps you live creatively, think deeply, and includes time to nourish yourself.

The Nourished Planner is a place of structure and flexibility and a home to map your weeks, schedule downtime, plan meals, and even those activities that allow you to give back.

  1. Bryan says:

This was such a good article. I really felt a taste of being a higher functioning 4 this past week and I felt like reversing everything and becoming someone totally different. I think being higher-functioning is now my goal list.
I’m losing weight and becoming more confident in who I am because it feels great, but I want to focus my energy and efforts on knowing where I’m headed and this really helped.
Thank you for putting this together

    • Alexa Schirm says:

  2. Cana says:

So often I struggle blindly in the depths of my emotions. I usually don’t even realize it. I just feel awful and sensitive and can tell nobody enjoys being around this well of melancholy. I really appreciate this reminder of I am not my emotions. I am creative and beautiful and THAT’s where my energy should be through gratitude and thanksgiving. To do lists are so much my strength that they are my weakness😂 I have SO many! Thanks again for this article.
