Health is difficult, and not in the way you think. It’s difficult not because you don’t know what to eat but because it’s emotional, making healing less about a food detox and more about an emotional detox.

It might feel like food complicates things. It’s not about food but the reason you eat what you do. If you remove the emotional aspect, eating healthy food would be easy. But it’s not or hasn’t been, like exercise and every other health tip on the planet, because there is an emotional attachment.

All of life is emotional or at least stirs an emotion inside you. That’s because humans are emotional beings. Emotions are part of the human experience.

Even when you don’t think you’re feeling anything, you are. You’ve likely become great at suppressing, numbing, shoving, or distracting yourself from what you say you’re not feeling, making it appear like you feel nothing.

I say this because I, too, lived this.

But you can’t escape emotions. They are part of you, as are your fingers and toes. However, you can learn how to use them to improve your life and health. This is where health and happiness coexist.

On the podcast, we explore emotions and prove why they are responsible for biological functions. Inside, you’ll learn the connection between cellular health and emotional health and how to boost both.

Why You Need An Emotional Detox

Your entire biology is interconnected to your emotions. Like hormones, your emotions are energetic messenger molecules that account for roughly 70% of your total energy.

When felt, emotions carry a charge and are sent through the body, generating a response and action. That action determines your outcome. Over time, what you repeatedly feel turns into your pattern. This makes it challenging to experience health, no matter how many external changes you attempt to make.

If you don’t change what you feel, you’ll never change the response to what you do because how your body responds is the most important factor you need to pay attention to in health.

Changing how you feel starts by understanding what you feel.

Pay attention; What Do You Feel?

I know it can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. The more you do it, the less uncomfortable it will be.

Remember, just because you feel it doesn’t mean you are it. Just because you feel sad does not mean you are depressed. Just like feeling fat does not mean you are fat.

You were designed to feel emotions, but you are not emotions.

Take time to understand your emotions, but be careful what you do with them. Emotions are “energy-in-motion.” They were designed to move, not get stuck or stall. It’s here that you experience patterns of unhealth. It’s the place where what you feel starts to become who you are.

But it doesn’t have to stay that way. The key is learning how to process emotions through releasing them (an emotional detox).

The emotional power of energy

Again, emotions are energetic messenger molecules distinguished by the charge associated. All emotions have different charges, creating different responses in your biology.

Lower-energy molecules require more energy to deal with, which is why you feel tired after crying or leaving behind the stress of the day. Just like laughing and joy bring you energy.

What emotions you experience repeatedly influence energy shift, shifting your body to a state of surviving or thriving based on the energetic threshold you exist within.

The goal in health is always supporting energy.

If you experience negative emotions more frequently, your body is probably under stress. Likewise, moving up the chart to higher-energy emotions will boost or fill your energy tank.

It’s easy to assume the goal is avoiding emotions. But that’s not the case at all.

Your body was designed emotionally. Emotions determine functions. God designed you to be emotional on purpose. Emotion is part of life’s greater experience and a tool to help you.

But don’t cling to what you feel. Instead, feel it and then free it.

Let yourself feel what you feel and then release it so you can feel something else.

The key is to do an emotional detox. This daily practice can change your entire biology, moving you from surviving to thriving.

Seven Steps To Begin Your Emotional Detox

Rather than trying to change what you eat, begin by changing how you feel. It may not be as sexy or as easy to track, but it’s significantly more powerful than how you eat. It can also change what you desire to eat without the added stress.

Emotional regulation is a pillar of health. It starts by learning how to detox your emotions, letting go of those that hold you back so you can fill yourself with those that energize your entire biology.

01: Pay attention to what you feel.

It feels the most basic, but it’s the tip most people overlook. Not because you’re bad at feeling but because you were told it’s better to suppress your feelings than name them. Of course, they didn’t say it like that. Most likely, it came in statements like, “Stop crying.” “Keep your chin up.” “Don’t worry. It’s going to be okay.”

They seem harmless, but statements rather than questions tend to push aside your emotions rather than get to know them. And you must get to know what you feel because you can’t change what you can’t name.

Take time to understand your emotions. How do you feel? Remember, your natural instinct may be to cover or suppress, maybe even lessen, but try to be as honest with yourself as possible. Name what you feel.

02. Filter your feelings.

Humans are emotional. As is every decision you make. Of course, we know emotions are not the most reliable source but rather a perspective that can tend to push aside logic, even what’s right and good. To prevent this, take time to filter your emotions. You may be upset, but what is causing that, and how do you want to react?

If you don’t filter your feelings, they will control you, leading you to a place you don’t want to go. Filter your feelings with your mind, beliefs, and goals to choose how you’ll react regardless of how you feel.

03. Get Outside Yourself.

Emotions can feel like a freight train. They’re hard to stop once they build momentum and even harder to see outside of. That’s why choosing to see outside yourself is a very intentional step. It won’t just happen. You have to choose it.

But taking a step outside yourself helps realign you with life. Remember, your feelings are a perspective of what is happening, and perspective, while it might feel true to you, is not always true. Getting outside yourself could be as simple as sharing your feelings with a friend, meeting with a therapist, or digging into the spiritual side of yourself and realigning your feelings with God’s truth.

04. Pay attention to How You Numb.

You could call these your vices or scapegoats. Regardless, we all tend to have a place we run when we’re feeling overwhelmed, emotional, or spent. Negative emotions push on our safety, igniting a full-fledged physical and mental retaliation to seek safety.

This isn’t surprising. We all do it. It’s human nature to avoid what is hard and overcompensate with what we call good. And not all vices are wrong. But some can be, and arguably all will be, if you use them to escape what you feel rather than cope with what you feel.

When you know you can change, even if that change happens once you’re elbow deep into a Ben and Jerry’s. Pay attention to your vices and use them to alert you when you’re avoiding big feelings and choose to act differently. Actions change your mindset, reinforcing better outcomes.

05. Start A Journaling Routine

Do you feel like I transported you back to your middle school years? The days of writing in a diary about your secrets and all the things you feel? It might seem childish, but writing is a form of release. And it’s a powerful one that can help you shift the story you believe, changing how you feel.

It doesn’t have to be complicated. Giving yourself 20 minutes with an empty notebook to write anything and everything that comes to mind is one of your best tools for processing. Try it out weekly, and if you feel comfortable, continue to increase the frequency to what you find helps you most. Get started with this simple prompt. What are you feeling and why?

06. Talk to A Professional

Similar to journaling or the act of getting outside of yourself, sometimes you need someone who really knows how to help you. Someone who doesn’t enable your feelings or challenge you to suppress them but someone who can help you work through your emotions. If this is you, find a therapist!

07. Stop complaining and fill up on the good.

Emotions and your response to those can easily become a part of your pattern. Like a tic, when you feel x, you automatically revert to y. It might even feel like you’re stuck. But what can be patterned can be repatterned. This means you have every ability to shift your natural response, cleansing you of your old emotions and moving into healthier ones.

But that means you must stop complaining and focusing on what is wrong and start filling up on the good. A complaint cleanse is one of the more powerful cleanses you can do that shapes not only your mind or biology.

Words are powerful! What you speak is often what becomes your life. Letting go of the negative opens up room for the good stuff. This is where the good part begins—the place where you can get out and enjoy your life while continuously working to fill your mind, body, and soul with nourishing activities you truly enjoy.
